Cody Memorial Library

First free-standing library for the university.

Cody Memorial Library was the first freestanding library on today’s campus. The building was named in honor of C.C. (Claude Carr) Cody, Southwestern’s first Dean, close friend of Francis Asbury Mood, and beloved professor of mathematics. Designed by Cameron Fairchild, it cost $81,000 to construct, and was partially financed by a Works Progress Administration grant to the city.

Congressman Lyndon Baines Johnson was instrumental in procuring these funds for Southwestern, then in his 10th Congressional District. At opening, the building held 51,890 volumes. The building was added onto twice - first in 1966 again in 1988. The building is now the home of Special Collections and Archives.
