Bishops Memorial Union

Bishops Memorial Union served as the first on-campus student center replacing the Pirates Tavern that was located across the street from Cullen. Designed by Cameron Fairchild, the space was named for university alumni and a faculty member who had been elected bishops in the Methodist Church. The Bishops were Sam Hay, H.A. Boaz, A. Frank Smith, H. Bascom Watts, and Edwin D. Mouzon. Constructed from the same limestone used throughout the campus, the building featured a large lounge, faculty lounge, music room, post office, snack bar, bookstore, and bowling alleys. The functions of this building, as well as the University Commons, were absorbed by the McCombs Campus Center in 1998.
