It first lived at the site of the Old Campus, which was located about eight blocks west of the Cullen Building, where this pin has been stuck on the Placing Memory map. This Old Campus (where Southwestern actually started its history in Georgetown) used the South Western Bell from the early 1870s to 1916, as it was hung in the school’s belfry. The bell notified students of wakeup and curfew times, as well as when to come to chapel and meals.
\r\n
\r\nIn the early 1900s, as classes, boarding, and operations were moved to the “New Campus” (where Southwestern is situated today, which for the first 3 decades of Southwestern’s existence was the location only of the Ladies Annex). The bell rang its final ring here in 1916, after almost fifty years of use at the site. Then, the bell was displaced to its second location, in storage at First Methodist Church of Georgetown.","sponsor":null,"accessinfo":"","lede":"","website":"","related_resources":[],"factoids":[],"files":{"https://placingmemory.southwestern.edu/files/fullsize/7cecd4e116e8dd3ab14a97015681060c.jpg":{"id":73,"mime-type":"image/jpeg","title":"South Western Bell, fixed on campus","description":"creator | 2023 | Teddy Hoffman","thumbnail":"https://placingmemory.southwestern.edu/files/square_thumbnails/7cecd4e116e8dd3ab14a97015681060c.jpg"}}}
